Top Shelf at Windsor Terrace

Maleha A. and Noor T

Hey friends, it's Noor and Maleha here. Noor, why don’t you start us off...

At the Windsor Terrace Library the top shelf of the kid's fiction area was boring and a totally unreachable display for books. But we took that boring unreachable shelf and turned it into something that the kids would enjoy looking at.

The idea came to our heads when we were looking for coloring pages for the kids to color in. Then an idea popped into Maleha’s brain that I didn’t know existed. DINOSAURS READING BOOKS!! Like those who don’t like dinosaurs? Maybe except for the asteroid that made them go extinct.

We started planning on how to make the display library appropriate and fun to look at. Which lead us to think about pairing book genres with the Dinos on each shelf. We realized there were 9 shelves that needed to be filled so Maleha thought of an idea where the dinosaurs go through this adventure in every genre before reaching the “library shelf”.

We started with our favorite genre, Romance. I’m pretty sure we read enough Romance books to be experts at making this background, cough cough.  Then we came up with the 7 most read genres: Romance, Mystery, Horror, Graphic Novels, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Real-Life stories, and came up with ideas for those.

Okay, now it’s Maleha’s turn to tell you how we did it...

Since I did all the thinking in this project, Noor was the one to make the idea come to life. With Noor's crafty hands and my amazing scissor skills, we got straight to work. Each background started with pieces of paper that Noor effortlessly put together. She cut, ripped, glued, and struggled to make the work into a reality. When we were making the romance background, I just thought of paper hearts, but Noor was like no! We can use pompoms and make a heart. She used every material she got her hands on.

The library was our favorite one to make because it was detailed after Windsor Terrace library. While working on this project we had many failures and thought we would never finish, but the result was worth it.
