Park Slope Book Lovers Group Wants YOUR Vote!

J. Gibson

If you’re a teenager who enjoys reading then the Teens’ Top Ten might be something you’d like to look into. The Teens' Top Ten is a “teen choice" award, where teens choose their favorite books of the previous year. This year twenty-five amazing books have been nominated and now from August 15 to October 15 it’s up to all of us - teens across the country - to vote and narrow those twenty-five books to the best ten. Beginning August 15, teens can vote online here. You can find all titles at Brooklyn Public Library. Visit your local branch or our online catalog to place holds!

Are you wondering “How do the 25 nominees get picked in the first place?” Well, every year, the Young Adult Library Services Association selects 15 teen book groups from across the country. These groups get an early look at the newest books and they get nominations from teens across the country. They read, review, and select those that they think are best from all of these, until they have a final list of 25 nominees. In August they open the ballot and run the election. The winning Teens' Top Ten titles are announced in October, during TeenTober™.  TeenTober™ is an annual event held at the end of October that aims to “celebrate teens, promote year-round teen services and the innovative ways teen services help teens learn new skills, and fuel their passions in and outside the library.”

Would you like to get involved? First, make sure to read the nominees and vote from August 15 to October 15. And if you really want to have an impact, join the Park Slope Teen Book Lovers' Group at the Park Slope Library! This year we are determined that Brooklyn teen voices will be heard! We will be hosting a book group to engage in indepth discussions of the nominees. We will be taking action to get teens involved in the election by reaching out to our schools and communities and sharing our favorites, and helping teens place their votes. The book group is a great way to meet other people that enjoy reading, and if you’ve not read all twenty-five books it’s a wonderful way to become acquainted with some of them. Stay tuned for our next meeting date at the Park Slope Library. We’d love to see you there!
