Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill’s brilliant, honest and courageous writing defined New York City’s last great era of print journalism. For five decades, these iconic columnists and longtime friends wrote prolifically, pioneering a style of “New Journalism” that brought elements of storytelling to the news and looked at economic and racial injustice through the lens of ordinary people. Filled with the gusto and humor they both personified, the film draws on rare footage, family archives, and interviews with Tom Wolfe, Guy Talese, Gloria Steinem, Spike Lee, and Robert De Niro, among others.
This is the 2019 keynote film and will be followed by a keynote conversation with the directors, moderated by Isaac Fitzgerald of Buzzfeed News, and a reception.
