  • SummaryCollage, 23 x 25 inches, includes image of squirrel. Artwork created in New York Harbor Hospital Creative Arts Program, led by Beryl Brenner. Project: Visions of vets, 2009, referencing the theme: Who is an American veteran? Artwork was displayed at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Vietnam Era Museum and Education Center. Exhibition label: Seeking security by Jeffrey Cerio. In “Seeking Security” Mr. Cerio (a soldier that served during peace time) utilizes the symbol of an isolated squirrel. Squirrels traditionally represent a group that exhibits great concerns about safety as they are generally associated with saving food and addressing their basic needs. He looks down at the words USA. The squirrel is alone in the wilderness, but the frame represents a field of protection that association with a larger group implies. Consequently, the squirrel looks to the larger group for his safety.
