  • SummaryCollage, 25 x 23 inches, with images from the Vietnam War. Artwork created in New York Harbor Hospital Creative Arts Program, led by Beryl Brenner. Project: Visions of vets, 2009, referencing the theme: Who is an American Veteran? Artwork was displayed at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Vietnam Era Museum and Education Center. Exhibition label: My Vietnam Experience by Dindal Soogrim “I came to America from the tiny island of Trinidad and Tobago in July of 1967. I joined the military in Dec. 1967 so that I could stay here. In the last 4 months of my active duty I was sent to Vietnam.” Mr. Soogrim’s work depicts a self-portrait of him in military attire with the image of an American eagle watching over him. Scenes and memorabilia from Vietnam float around him like a surreal river of memories from this time. Yet symbols of Americana also appear in the work forever connecting his youthful Vietnam experience with his American experience.
