The family came from Russia in 1880s, likely fleeing pogroms -- (5:20) Charles' great-grandfather William was an insurance salesman. Family were middle class Brooklynites who wanted to get rid of their "shtetliness" -- (8:00) Charles' grandfather Bert lived in Flatbush, fought in WWII. Grandmother Carol lived in Crown Heights. Bert was a football star on CUNY team. Later, family moved to NJ but Carol still defined herself as Brooklynite -- (11:30) In 2013 Charles moved to Brooklyn to live with his brother. Ideal place for a 25 year old, musician -- (13:00) Now lives in South Brooklyn, reminiscent of the low-key place his grandmother described, but culturally vibrant and always changing -- (15:25) Jewish identity today in Brooklyn.

  • Biographical NoteMolly (nee Ellerstein) and William Winston (b. Russia, June 7, 1892) married on July 1, 1921. Lived in Brooklyn at 993 Carroll Streeet. William sold insurance and Molly was a teacher at Midwood High School. They had two children: Carol (b. 1923) and Stuart (b. 1925). Carol married Bertram Rudoy on January 23, 1943 and had four children: James Leslie (b. March 24, 1949), Peter (b. August 1, 1952), Jane Elizabeth (b. April 8, 1955) and Kathy Ellen (b. December 13, 1956.)
