BHS is pleased to announce the publishing of Writings from Racial Realities - seven personal stories written by students who participated in a workshop lead by Svetlana Kitto:

This collection includes stories about Blackness; Americanness; international identities; sexism and dating; memories and memorials of war; going back home; 9/11; changing Brooklyn neighborhoods; Barack Obama; middle school dances and adolescent friendships; and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Each story is accompanied by a photograph so, to read and see each one, click through the slideshow using the numbers tabs at the bottom.

The writing & oral history workshop that generated these great pieces is part of Brooklyn Historical Society's oral history project and public programming series Crossing Borders, Bridging Generations (CBBG for short) which explores the history and experiences of mixed-heritage people and families in Brooklyn.

You can see more photos of the workshop here as well as read about their visit with Ed German, author of Deep Down in Brooklyn.
