Kids Create: Choose Kind

Elizabeth Blake

Whether you’ve read (and probably fallen in love with) R.J. Palacio’s book Wonder or not, it is easy to get excited about the theme of the book: Choose Kind.  In honor of the release of the movie inspired by the book, libraries all over Brooklyn are celebrating by hosting events meant to inspire our youngest patrons to choose kind.

Kindness Board

At Cortelyou, our "Choose Kind" program took place during our weekly Kids Create program this week. It was pretty simple and required just a little bit of preparation. Before the program, I made a “Choose Kind” banner for our bulletin board, and also printed some card templates from the Wonder toolkit. I found some blank stationery in our arts and crafts closet and got that ready as well. We printed Mr. Browne’s precepts (rules to live by) as well as other inspirational quotes to add to the Kindness Board and help the kids get inspired! One of my favorite of Mr. Browne’s precepts is “When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind.”-Dr Wayne Dyer.

Choose Kind

I am always finding myself inspired by the things that our littlest patrons come up with when prompted to do something nice for someone else. A few of my favorite cards read: “You’re amazing just the way you are,” “You are so sweet and so nice,” and “You are unique.”

At the end of the program, we all took a moment to take the kindness pledge.

If you are feeling inspired to #choosekind, check out a Choose Kind event at your local branch this week!
