Featured Poem: YOU by Mehrin Faisal

YOU

I’ve seen you with the corner of my eyes,

I’ve gotten to know you by the way you socialize,

I’ve asked God for your replies,

When I’ve prayed with my eyes set on the skies.

I’ve seen the beauty of your eyes,

I’ve seen the way it captures lies,

I’ve seen the way your heart aches,

When our love song belies.

I’ve communicated with you through my eyes,

I’ve seen the way they verbalize,

I’ve vocalized my thoughts through my eyes,

When I’ve thought you’d apprize.

I’ve seen the pain in your eyes,

I’ve seen the way they sensationalize,

I’ve asked God for their replies,

When I’ve prayed with my eyes set on the skies,

Hoping they’ll never say goodbye.

Mehrin Faisal (@mehhhriiin) is a senior at Leonardo Da Vinci High School, who proudly calls herself a Bengali-American as she thrives with the beauties of Bangladesh and the altruistic dreams of America. She enjoys serving the community as she is a volunteer and intern at many community engagement organizations, along with Brooklyn Public Library. Her future aspirations lie in the medical field as she hopes to heal the individuals here and in Bangladesh. With inquiries of sciences, she takes pleasure with exploring various activities, from playing instruments and sports to simply writing a few words into stanzas. This poem, YOU, is written to reinforce that sometimes our eyes speak way more than we realize. It is for those ear-piercing eyes that many times our silences can be full of stentorian sounds.
