Happy Fat Liberation Month!

Did you know August is Fat Liberation Month? Started by the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance, it is a month-long celebration of fat positivity, and to address the history of discrimination and stigma against fat people. Here are ten books that feature fat main characters and / or real fat people's stories. 

  1. Across a Field of Starlight: a graphic novel by Blue Delliquanti: Lu and Fassen are from different worlds and separate solar systems, so when the war of Fassen's world invades Lu's peaceful home, they find themselves at the forefront of a battle they hoped would never happen.
  2. Darius the Great is Not Okay by Adib Khorram: Clinically-depressed Darius Kellner, a high school sophomore, travels to Iran to meet his grandparents, but it is their next-door neighbor, Sohrab, who changes his life.
  3. Eat Your Heart Out by Kelly deVos: Six disgruntled teens are forced to spend their winter break at fat camp during Flagstaff, Arizona's worst blizzard in a century, only to find that Camp Featherlite is even worse than expected because it is crawling with genetically-modified monsters.
  4. Every Body Shines: Sixteen Stories About Living Fabulously Fat, edited by Cassandra Newbould: Sixteen stories celebrating fat teens with bodies of many shapes and from many communities, cultures, races, genders, and orientations in contemporary settings as well as fictional worlds. 
  5. Here the Whole Time by Vitor Martins: When Felipe, who is very insecure about his weight, is forced to spend winter break with his long-term crush, Caio, he must face his unresolved issues head-on.
  6. If It Makes You Happy by Claire Kann: Looking forward to a perfect last summer with loved ones before starting college, a plus-sized teen is forced to confront her fear of the spotlight when she unexpectedly wins a local pageant and is obligated to balance community engagements with her friendships, a new romance and her job at her granny's 1950s-themed diner.
  7. I’ll Be the One by Lyla Lee: Sixteen-year-old Korean American Skye Shin competes on a reality television show, hoping to become the first plus-sized K-pop star, while falling for her competitor Henry Cho, who happens to be a world-famous celebrity.
  8. Love Is a Revolution by Renée Watson: Harlem teenager Nala is looking forward to a summer of movies and ice cream until she falls in love with the very woke Tye and pretends to be a social activist.
  9. The (Other) F Word: A Celebration of the Fat and Fierce, edited by Angie Manfredi: A crossover anthology for teens and activists shares essays, prose, fashion tips and art to offer strategies for overcoming today’s narrow definitions of beauty and styling oneself in accordance with body positivity and acceptance of all sizes. The New David Espinoz
  10. There's Something about Sweetie by Sandhya Menon: A brokenhearted Indian-American teen agrees to allow his parents to set him up on culturally approved dates with a track athlete, who is tired of being nagged by her traditionally minded family about her plus-sized body.
