Community Printmaking Workshop with Ellen Coleman Izzo
Neighborhood Printing Collective is partnering with the Brooklyn Public Library to bring a free, open to the public printmaking workshop. On November 16th, we will be making art with and gathering stories from the community in celebration of our neighborhoods.
In the workshop, we will be thinking about what makes our neighborhood special. Participants will learn how to make and print collagraph plates. Collagraph is a simple printmaking technique that can be made with easy to find materials and printed in a surprising variety of ways. We will use old file folders to cut, arrange and glue, making a “plate“ representing a person, place or thing of importance from the neighborhood. Plates will be inked and printed multiple times on papers and/or a simple fabric flag for workshop artists to take home. Participants will be able to make many plates during the workshop in different colors.
As we are working, Ellen would love to hear stories from what it is like living by the BQE highway. These stories and plates will become part of a bigger art project. To learn more, you can search for: Neighborhood Printing Collective.
Neighborhood Printing Collective is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council. The grant provides funds for conducting six printmaking workshops in Bay Ridge and Sunset Park. Speedball Arts has also donated printmaking supplies for the project.
