Donald Spanel served as the consultant to the current exhibition “Turkey Saved My Life—Baldwin in Istanbul, 1961–1971” at the Brooklyn Public Library. He is the archivist of Sedat Pakay’s photographic materials. A former Egyptologist, he received his PhD from the University of Toronto. Dr. Spanel was a friend of Sedat Pakay’s and received his approval to write a book about his photography, which is nearing completion. An excerpt was published as “Sedat Pakay’s Photographs of James Baldwin in Istanbul,” in the James Baldwin Review 19 (2024): 276–96.
