People often say that the idea of a supreme creator in charge of the universe is reassuring. But wouldn't it be more reassuring to know that whatever exists, does so due to math? That the logic and rationality of mathematics governs everything? And as such, isn't math the only true mind of god that can be proved?

Manil Suri, a distinguished mathematics professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County is the bestselling author of The Death of Vishnu and other novels. His book, The Big Bang of Numbers: How to Build the Universe Using Only Math, was a finalist for the 2023 PEN/E.O. Wilson literary science writing award.
