Brooklyn Resists Curriculum: Epilogue

When we interviewed Dr. Brian Purnell, Nona Faustine and Dr. Aja Lans, our last question was, "Who is your favorite Brooklynite?" All said Shirley Chisholm and Spike Lee. These are Black Brooklynites who endured racism and found joy throughout their life in Brooklyn and beyond.  Watch the video to see who their favorite Brooklynite is. Who would you add to the list?

Lesson: Black Brooklynites Who Persisted

Step 1: Watch Favorite Brooklynites video using the Video Worksheet.

Step 2: Facilitate a conversation with the class about famous Black Brooklynites (Jay-Z,  John Jea,  Dr. Susan Smith McKinney Steward, Tracy Morgan, Hakeem Jefferies, Elizabeth Gloucester, Lil Kim, Joan Maynard, Eddie Murphy). Ask students if they know anyone from Brooklyn. If they are unsure, have them conduct an internet search.

Step 3: Have students report the list of people they found.

Step 4: Ask, how these Black Brooklynites helped shape Brooklyn, New York City, New York State, and/or the United States.
