Mother Goose in an Air-Ship: McLoughlin Bros. 19th Century Children's Books from the Liman Collection

to
Center for Brooklyn History
This exhibition was originally organized and published by the Brooklyn Historical Society.

Mother Goose in an Air-Ship highlighted BHS's collection of beautifully-illustrated children's books printed in Brooklyn by McLoughlin Brothers.

In the 19th century, the McLoughlin Brothers pioneered new mass-production technology and marketing techniques for inexpensive children's books. The exhibition displayed children's classics such as Alice in Wonderland and adaptations of Robinson Crusoe, educational books like The History of the United States in One Syllable, cautionary tales like those in the Little Slovenly Peter series, books teaching children how to paint or draw, along with games and puzzles for an all-ages audience.  Visitors were able to leaf through facsimiles of select books and also try their hand at drawing and coloring other facsimile images from McLoughlin Brothers "how to" books.

The Liman collection of 19th McLoughlin Brothers illustrated children's books was graciously donated to Brooklyn Historical Society by Ellen Liman. This exhibition was made possible through generous support from The Liman Foundation and Astoria Federal Savings.
