Mapping Our Worlds

A seven-week program for teens to build creativity and community through artistic map-making.

Make art and make some new friends, too! This spring, teens are invited to participate in Mapping Our Worlds, a free art program hosted by Brooklyn Public Library and Stingray Arts Collective. Slow down from the chaos of the past two years and reconnect to yourself, your life journey, and your joy. Learn how to map your community, your culture, and your future through collage art, creative writing, meditation, movement and more. Workshops begin in April 2022; apply online to participate. Teens will receive a $100 stipend for participating in the program.

Over the past two years, the Covid-19 pandemic changed our lives in unimaginable ways. While we may have returned to school or work, we are still recovering from the pandemic's effects, especially the prolonged social disruption. Mapping Our Worlds is a teen program that focuses on slowing down, processing the ways we've changed, and reconnecting to ourselves and others through art-making experiences.

This program might be a good fit for you if:
  • You want to create through art, play, have fun, and have meaningful conversations and experiences with other teens.
  • You are seeking ways to process how you have changed over these last two years.
  • You sometimes feel that life is moving too fast, or you feel overwhelmed and you don’t know how to slow down.
  • You are looking for a break from stress or pressure you feel in your life.
  • You want to learn new self-care tools to practice during hard times.
Why maps?

Maps can help us see where we stand, and they can show us where we need to go next. Rather than making literal maps of geographical places, we will be “mapping” our emotions, dreams, memories, bodies, sounds, tastes, smells, and visions for the future. We’ll use maps as a metaphor to guide our explorations throughout our journey together.

  • Session 1: Mapping my emotions: inner landscapes and self-compassion
  • Session 2: Mapping my space: my community and defining home
  • Session 3: Mapping my body: claiming our terrain
  • Session 4: Mapping our future: our communities and life beyond borders
  • Session 5: Mapping our cultures through family foods: connecting food to land and lineage
  • Session 6: Mapping our purpose: directions for the journey forward

Participants will attend weekly sessions at either Carroll Gardens Library or Cypress Hills Library.

  • Sessions at Carroll Gardens Library: Mondays from 3:30–5:30 pm: 4/4, 4/11, 4/25, 5/2, 5/9, 5/16
  • Sessions at Cypress Hills Library: Wednesdays from 3:30–5:30 pm: 4/6, 4/13, 4/27, 5/4, 5/11, 5/18
