Brooklyn, NY – Assemblymember Carroll (D/WF-Brooklyn) joined Linda E. Johnson, President and CEO of Brooklyn Public Library, today to announce that he has secured $50,000 in State funds to support the Library’s adult learning education and training programming.
“The Brooklyn Public Library is one of our Borough’s most vital institutions and I am proud to be able to support their efforts to align their adult literacy programming with evidence-based practices following the science of reading” said Assemblymember Robert Carroll. “As a person with dyslexia, I know first-hand how much of a difference evidence-based reading interventions can make. Becoming a fluent reader can transform one’s life and we want everyone to have the chance to achieve this.”
"As a leader in developing modern 21st century libraries, it is imperative that our librarians and classroom instructors use the latest evidence-based research to develop lessons for our adult learners," said Linda E. Johnson, President and CEO, Brooklyn Public Library. "We are grateful to Assembly Member Carroll, a long-time champion of libraries, for this generous allocation. With these funds, we can provide the most effective and up-to-date classroom instruction for our adult learners, helping them to become active and engaged members of our community.”
The $50,000 in State funding will go towards:
- Training staff and stakeholders about the science of reading and its application to adult learners;
- Revamping tutor training to incorporate the latest science and evidence based best practices on reading and writing instruction;
- Maintaining a depository of research, studies, articles, and other literature and media on the science of reading;
- Integrating more decodable reading materials and multimedia into the BPL’s print and electronic collection; and
- Sharing these efforts and the Library’s experiences with the broader adult learning community.
Assemblymember Robert Carroll (D-WF) represents Brooklyn's 44th Assembly District, which includes the neighborhoods of Prospect Heights, Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Kensington, Victorian Flatbush, Borough Park, Ditmas Park, and Midwood.
