Lux Magazine - Spring Issue Launch and Panel Discussion
Join us at Brooklyn Heights Library to celebrate the launch of Lux Magazine's Spring Issue with a panel discussion on Policing Gender in Sports.
Attacks on trans athletes have become central to American politics, from Donald Trump’s early executive orders to Gavin Newsom’s podcast provocations. How can we understand the scale and viciousness of this attack?
For Lux Issue 13, Emily Janakiram and Megan Lessard did a deep dive into the long history of policing gender in women’s sports, from the early 1900s when athletic competition was said to alter women’s gender, through the obscene testing regimes and surveillance that persist today against trans, cis, and intersex athletes. The article helps us to understand how sports became a site to enforce conservative notions of gender.
Please join us for a discussion with Emily Janakiram, Megan Lessard, and Danne Diamond, moderated by Lux contributing editor Kate Redburn of Columbia Law School.
