Explore our world! In the Science in the House series teens get a chance to meet with all kinds of interesting scientists and other people. Hear their stories and learn more about their lives and their work. Discover what life as a scientist is like!

How can we see something that is invisible?

Let's find out! Join us for a conversation with astronomer Gabriel Bridges. He is searching for dark matter and black holes, using the NuSTAR (an X-Ray space telescope) to study energetic objects in outer space. In fact his experiment is about to be launched into space! Join us to learn more about it.

"Most of my work these days is focused on an experimental search for dark matter using a particle detector that I'm launching to the edge of space in December. I also work with NuSTAR (an X-Ray space telescope) to study energetic objects in outer space including black holes. Finally, I am embarking on a campaign to launch my experiment into space at the end of April. I'd love to tell you about it! "

 

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Gabriel is a PhD student at Columbia University studying particle astrophysics. His passion for all things outer-space is older than he can remember, predating his kindergarten 100-day project for which he presented 100 photos transmitted by the Mars Rover Opportunity. . 
 
Today, Gabriel works on the General Anti-Particle Spectrometer (or GAPS for short), a cutting-edge experiment designed to uncover the mystery of dark matter: the invisible stuff that binds galaxies together. In October, Gabriel will embark on a journey to the South Pole, where he will play a crucial role in launching GAPS to the edge of space and initiating its quest to detect dark matter.
 
Beyond hunting for dark matter, Gabriel also investigates most energetic objects in outer space: white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes. He employs observations from the NuSTAR space telescope to learn more about these stellar remnants and the physics that keeps them shining. 
 
Gabriel loves to connect with aspiring scientists and share his passion for the cosmos. He especially looks forwards to meeting the bright young minds at the Brooklyn Public Library.
