BPL Presents humanities and art University Open Air

For this University Open Air session, Marcelo invites you to share the sayings you've learned from your family, friends, and acquaintances that have helped you cope with difficult situations in the city or country where you're currently living, and also to share the context or story behind the saying, how and why it was said to you, or why it has stuck in your mind.

During this session, Marcelo will share the story that inspired him to propose this project to the Brooklyn Library, as well as his relationship with sayings at different stages of his life and how they have influenced his experience as an immigrant. Additionally, Marcelo will present the outcomes of the project after collecting sayings from immigrants in NYC.

The goal is to engage in conversations and recreate our experiences as immigrants in NYC through sayings.
___________________________________________________________

This project aims to reclaim and preserve the popular wisdom found in the sayings shared by immigrants living in New York City. These sayings are often passed down from parents, family members, and friends or were learned in their home countries. They play a vital role in maintaining the popular culture of their cities or towns of origin.

These sayings provide immigrants with a comforting and familiar inner voice, offering motivation during challenging and often hostile circumstances. They encourage immigrants to persevere in pursuing their dreams and provide solace and hope during the inevitable difficulties that arise in their journey in a new city.

University Open Air is generously supported by The Morris & Alma Schapiro Fund.
