Colloquy: Translators in Conversation with Raina, Rogers & Shyue
Please join World Poetry Books, Montez Press Radio and BPL Presents for the latest installment of Colloquy: Translators in Conversation, with readings and discussion from Kalpana Raina, Jacob Rogers and Jennifer Shyue on their recent translations for the independent publisher of international literature in translation, Archipelago Books. The event will be introduced and moderated by C. Francis Fisher.
Raina, Rogers and Shyue will read from their translations, respectively, of the work of Hari Krishna Kaul, Manuel Rivas, and Augusto Higa Oshiro—followed by a conversation conducted by Fisher. Colloquy is an event series presented by World Poetry Books in collaboration with Montez Press Radio and partnering event spaces which invites translators to engage with live audiences in an exploration of the art of translation. Translations will be on sale from our local partners at Unnameable Books.
Participants
Kalpana Raina is a senior executive with extensive corporate and not-for-profit experience in the US and internationally. She currently serves on the boards of Information Services Group, Words Without Borders, and the advisory board of Impact Investment Exchange. Previously she was on the board of Yellow Media Group, John Wiley and Sons, RealNetworks, Inc., The World Policy Institute, World Music Institute and the Center for Communications.
Her collaborative translation project of stories from the Kashmiri language, For Now, It Is Night is her first work of translation and was recently published in India and the United States. Born in Kashmir, Kalpana lives in New York.
Jennifer Shyue is a translator from Spanish. Her work has appeared most recently in The New York Times, Lit Hub, and Oversound and has received support from Cornell University’s Institute for Comparative Modernities, the Fulbright Program, the National Endowment for the Arts, Princeton University, and the University of Iowa. Her translations include Julia Wong Kcomt’s chapbook Vice-royal-ties (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2021) and forthcoming poetry collection A Blind Salmon (Phoneme Media, 2024) and Augusto Higa Oshiro’s novel The Enlightenment of Katzuo Nakamatsu (Archipelago Books, 2023). Jacob Rogers is a translator of Galician and Spanish. He has received grants from the National Endowment of the Arts and the PEN/Heim Translation Fund. His translation of Manuel Rivas' The Last Days of Terranova was published by Archipelago Books in 2022, and of Berta Dávila's The Dear Ones by 3TimesRebel Press in 2023. He has been a guest editor on Galician literature features for Words Without Borders, The Riveter, and Asymptote, and his work has appeared in Circumference, Arkansas International, Granta en español, The Offing, and Waxwing, among others.
