Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Brooklyn Public Library

At Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), we believe that libraries are more than just buildings filled with books; they are vibrant community hubs where all voices, identities, and stories are valued. Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is at the heart of everything we do—from the collections we build to the programs we create and the services we offer.

Our Values

We are dedicated to ensuring that BPL is a welcoming and safe space for everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, age, religion, or socioeconomic background. We celebrate the rich diversity of Brooklyn and actively strive to reflect and amplify the voices of all members of our community. Our efforts are grounded in the following principles:

Two people stand talking in a library. One person is holding a stack of books for financial aid and applying to college and is handing them to the second person.
Diversity

We celebrate the richness of Brooklyn’s diverse communities. BPL is dedicated to reflecting the multiplicity of voices, cultures, and experiences across our borough. We actively work to create an inclusive environment where both visitors and staff feel represented and welcomed. Learn more below:

Our Actions

Through ongoing training, thoughtful programming, and community partnerships, we aim to cultivate a library that embodies the principles of DEI. From creating safe spaces for marginalized voices to offering resources that support racial, social, and economic justice, BPL is dedicated to making the library a place where everyone can access the tools they need to succeed.

We know that DEI work is ongoing, and we remain committed to doing the work required to achieve meaningful, lasting change for our staff, patrons, and the broader Brooklyn community.

Together, we can build a library that not only reflects but also celebrates the diversity and strength of our borough.
